Chemical Peels: What They Do, and Why We Add Them to Facials for £10

"Chemical peel" might be the most unhelpfully named treatment in the beauty industry. It sounds aggressive — something from a cosmetic surgery brochure, with red, flaking skin and a week indoors. The reality of a professional salon peel is gentler, quieter, and far more useful: a controlled exfoliating treatment that dissolves the bonds holding dead skin cells to the surface, so they release evenly and reveal the fresher skin underneath.

What a chemical peel actually does

Your skin renews itself naturally on a cycle of roughly 28 days — dead cells rise to the surface, dull the complexion, and eventually shed. As we age, that cycle slows, and the dead layer sits on the surface for longer. That is what "dull skin" mostly is.

A peel uses professional-strength acids — the same families you see diluted in home skincare — to dissolve the bonds holding that dead layer in place. Applied by a trained therapist at the right strength and timing, the result is:

• Brighter, more even tone — the fresh layer reflects light properly.
• Smoother texture — rough patches and dry flakes release.
• Clearer pores — the debris that leads to congestion and blackheads loosens.
• Better product absorption — serums and moisturisers reach skin that can actually use them.

The acid families do slightly different jobs. AHAs (like glycolic and mandelic acid) work at the surface for brightness and texture. BHAs (like salicylic acid) are oil-soluble, so they get into the pores — the congestion specialists. Azelaic and kojic acid target uneven tone and pigmentation. Who suits a peel — and who should wait

A peel add-on earns its place if you recognise any of these:

• Dull, tired-looking skin that no amount of highlighter fixes.
• Congestion and blackheads — especially around the nose and chin.
• Uneven tone or post-blemish marks that linger for months.
• Rough or bumpy texture you can feel when you cleanse.
• A big event coming up — a peel a week or two ahead is the classic pre-event skin prep.

When I would say not yet: if your skin is sunburnt, broken, or mid-flare (eczema, active cold sores, badly irritated rosacea), we treat and calm first and peel another day. If you are using prescription retinoids or have had recent clinical treatments, tell me at consultation — timing matters. This is exactly what the skin assessment at the start of every appointment is for, and if a peel is not right for your skin on the day, I will say so.

What it feels like, and what happens afterwards

During the treatment: a few minutes of mild tingling, sometimes a feeling of warmth. That is the expected sensation of the acids working — not a countdown to redness.

Afterwards, you can expect nothing more than a light, healthy flush that settles the same day. Professional salon peels at this level do not usually cause visible peeling — the shedding is microscopic and happens over the following days, which is when the brightness really comes through.

The aftercare matches our standard Million Dollar aftercare guidance: SPF 50 daily without exception (freshly resurfaced skin is more sensitive to UV), pause your strong actives — retinol, vitamin C, acids — for around a week, keep things cool and gentle for 48 hours, and let the results build. If you are having a peel before an occasion, book it at least a week ahead so your skin is at its peak on the day.

How often?

For most skins, a peel add-on every four to six weeks — riding along with your regular facial — is the sweet spot. It matches your skin's natural renewal cycle, and the results compound: each peel works on skin that is already functioning better than the month before. Your therapist will guide the rhythm; more is not better with acids, and we will always err on the side of your skin barrier.
