First Time Getting a Facial: What to Expect

There is a particular kind of nervousness that comes with booking a first facial. You do not know what to wear. You do not know whether you should arrive with makeup on or off. You worry about whether your skin is "bad enough" to justify it, or "good enough" not to be embarrassing. You do not know how much to talk. You do not know whether you will fall asleep. You do not know whether to tip.

This is the honest, step-by-step walk-through I wish every first-timer had before they walked in. By the end, you will know exactly what to expect from your first facial at Eternal Glow Beauty — and how to pick the right one without overthinking it.

Before the appointment

A few practical things in the days leading up:

• Avoid strong actives for 48 hours. If your home routine includes retinol, glycolic acid, or anything that "tingles," pause for two days before your facial. Your skin will tolerate the treatment better and you will get more out of it.
• Skip waxing and sun exposure for 24 hours. Both leave the skin sensitised. Your facial will be more comfortable on calm skin.
• Eat something an hour before. Lying down for 45 to 90 minutes on an empty stomach is rarely fun.
• Arrive with whatever face you have. Makeup, no makeup, sweat from the school run — none of it matters. The first thing I do at every appointment is cleanse, twice. You do not need to "tidy up" first.

If anything has changed about your skin recently — a new product reaction, a flare-up, recent peels or injectables — please mention it when you book or when you arrive. It changes which protocol is safe to use, and the consultation is for exactly this.

What to wear

Anything comfortable that you can let down at the neckline. I will tuck a soft headband at your hairline and a clean towel across your collarbones, so a t-shirt, blouse, or open-neck top works perfectly. There is no changing room ritual; you will not be in a robe. Bring a hair tie if your hair is long.

When you arrive

You will be welcomed with water or tea, and we will sit down for a five-minute consultation before anything else happens. This is the most important part of your appointment — not a formality. I will ask:

• How your skin currently feels and behaves day-to-day.
• What you are using at home.
• Whether you have any allergies, sensitivities, or recent procedures.
• What you are hoping to walk out feeling or looking like.

If the facial you booked turns out not to be the best fit for your skin on the day, this is when we say so. We adjust to what your skin actually needs, and any pricing differences are discussed before we begin.

What happens during the facial

Most facials follow the same broad architecture, regardless of which version you booked:

1. Cleanse, twice. A first cleanse to remove makeup, environmental residue and surface oil. A second to actually clean the skin.
2. Exfoliation. This step varies most between facials — sometimes it is a gentle enzyme, sometimes a HydroDiamond Dermabrasion device, sometimes active acids. It is never aggressive, but you may feel mild tingling or warmth.
3. The "active" step. This is where the work of the specific facial happens — radiofrequency for firmness, electroporation mesotherapy for hydration, lymphatic drainage for sculpting, peptide masks for event-ready glow. I will tell you what is happening as it happens. None of it should hurt.
4. The relaxing middle. Most facials include a 5–15 minute mask while I massage your hands, shoulders, or scalp. Genuinely the best part of the appointment. It is fine to fall asleep. I take it as a compliment.
5. Finish. Serum, moisturiser, eye cream, SPF. You will sit up slowly, take a sip of water, and have a moment to look in the mirror.

You will leave with a card noting which products were used and any aftercare specific to your treatment.

How to pick your first facial

If you genuinely do not know where to start, this is what I usually recommend:

After the appointment

Two things to know:

• Avoid heavy makeup for 12 hours. Your skin is freshly cleansed, exfoliated, and infused with active products. Let it benefit from that overnight.
• No active acids or retinol for 48 hours. Same reasoning as before — you have already given the skin enough work for one day.

You may notice your skin looks slightly pink or feels warm for an hour or two. That is normal — it is improved circulation, not irritation. Mild "purging" (small breakouts as deeper congestion clears) is also normal in the days following a first facial, particularly for oily and congested skin.
